• THE FUTURE OF COCONUT STARTS NOW •
Coconut is one of the world's most versatile and important tropical crops. But beneath a growing market lie challenges casting an increasingly long shadow on its sustainability.
Aging trees. Low and unstable incomes. Young people leaving farming, lack of traceability. Opaque supply chains. The future of coconut and the livelihoods it supports is at risk of a looming social and supply crisis.
But with practical, collective action, the sector can become more resilient, transparent, and fair.

Coconut is an important source of income for millions of farming households and a vital ingredient in global supply chains. However, the sector faces interconnected pressures that threaten its long-term future.
Across coconut-producing regions, aging trees and limited replanting are affecting productivity. Many farmers face low returns and limited access to investment, while younger generations see less and less farming as a viable opportunity. At the same time, buyers, processors, investors, and governments are facing rising expectations around traceability, due diligence, responsible sourcing, and mounting expectations to show impact and progress.
These are not separate challenges. They are connected, and they require a response that strengthens farms, livelihoods, supply chains, and market confidence together.

Aging trees and low productivity
Many coconut systems need investment, replanting, and better long-term planning to remain productive and viable.

Farmer livelihoods under pressure
Low and unstable incomes can limit farmers’ ability to invest in their land, families, and futures.

Youth leaving farming
When farming does not offer a reliable livelihood, the next generation looks elsewhere, putting the future workforce of the sector at risk.
Limited transparency
Fragmented supply chains make it harder to understand where coconut comes from, assess risks, and demonstrate responsible practice.

The challenge is social, economic, and environmental. It affects livelihoods today and the resilience of coconut supply tomorrow.

Sector consultations and SCP’s industry and stakeholders working groups determined that responsible rejuvenation is needed: a practical approach to renewing coconut systems in ways that work for people, businesses, and the future of the sector.
