Press Release: Coconut industry unites and launches the Sustainable Coconut Partnership to address rising sustainability challenges

The Partnership, an industry led multi stakeholder initiative, was formed to collaboratively find solutions towards a responsible and resilient coconut sector that drives positive impact for farmers' livelihoods, the climate and the environment and solve a generational challenge of sustainability for millions of coconut farmers.

Seventh Sustainable Coconut Roundtable

USAID Green Invest Asia, GIZ, and the Sustainable Coconut Partnership's Steering Committee convened the 2022 Sustainable Coconut Roundtable on November 25, 2022 in-person in Makati City, Philippines, with the theme “Advancing Resilient and Sustainable Coconut Supply in Southeast Asia”. The event market a transition in the life of the roundtable meeting series as it handed over to a new team to evolve into a formal impact driven organization representing the whole sector. 

The event focused on developments in the Philippines including a GIZ led Public Private Partnership, a pre-competitive collaboration among multinational corporations . It was followed by a panel discussions on advancing coconut sustainability in the Philippines with a large contingency of public representatives from the Philippines Coconut Authority

Restoring coconut farmers' sustainable livelihoods

USAID Green Invest Asia, Barry Callebaut, and GIZ convene the 6th Sustainable Coconut Roundtable on March 31, 2022 focused on “Securing Coconut Farmers' Sustainable Livelihoods”. One pillar of the Sustainable Coconut Charter is to “increase smallholder farmers’ income and subsequently their livelihoods by improving access to markets, finance, technology, increased capacity, productivity, and replanting”. The event includes an update on the formalization of the Sustainable Coconut Roundtable platform, an overview of livelihood challenges coconut farmers face, and expert panels on the potential of sustainable sourcing initiatives to increase coconut smallholder income and livelihoods.

Fostering Coconut Sustainability through partnership

The first event to be held following the November 2020 launch of the Sustainable Coconut Charter, signatories and stakeholders across the coconut value chain reconvene to continue developing a common, consistent approach to deliver impact at scale, share best practices for sustainable coconut production, including remote sensing to measure deforestation, and review a proposed governance structure.

Sustainable Coconut Charter signing

As follow-up to our years-long support of the Sustainable Coconut and Coconut Oil Roundtable, USAID Green Invest Asia, Barry Callebaut and Grow Asia convene this virtual signing event to launch the Sustainable Coconut Charter.

The event was featured the charter’s founding signatories plus panel discussions on potential impacts of coconut production on deforestation and biodiversity conservation, as well as Public- Private Partnerships, a pre-competitive collaboration among seven multinational corporations and GIZ to drive coconut sustainability in the region through the charter.

2nd Sustainable Coconut and Coconut Oil Round-table

​Over one year after an inaugural sustainable coconut roundtable was held in Malaysia, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and global cacao corporate, Barry Callebaut, reconvened coconut  buyers via webinar on June 30 to continue efforts to prevent a global coconut shortfall through a sustainable sourcing charter.
